Poker Games

HOLD 'EM is a community card game. All of our Hold-em games will be played with nine players, maximum of ten. There is a dealer button and two blinds that rotate clockwise around the table after each hand. Dealer button position is determined by a random one card deal, high card or first ace dealt will receive the button. The first player in front of the button then posts the small blind and the second player in front of the button posts the big blind. The blinds are posted before the dealer begins the deal. Each player receives two down cards as their initial hand; these are called "Hole Cards". This is followed by a betting round beginning with the first person in front of the big blind. The dealer burns a card and deals three community cards face up in the center of the table, this is called "The Flop", followed by a betting round. The dealer burns a card and deals a fourth card face up, this is called "The Turn", followed by a betting round. The dealer burns a card and deals one final card' this is called "The River", followed by a betting round. When betting is complete, the players make the best possible hand using any five-card combination between their hole cards and the board. The players may choose to use only the community cards, this is called "playing the board".

OMAHA is a community card game. All of our Omaha games will be played with nine players, maximum of ten. The dealer burns a card and deals three community cards face up in the center of the table, this is called "The Flop", followed by a betting round. The dealer burns and deals a fourth card face up; this is called "The Turn", followed by a betting round. STUD Seven-card stud is played straight high, straight low, or a combination of both high and low. All of our stud games will be played with seven players, maximum of eight. To start our games, each player receives two cards face down with an additional card face up. There is a betting round followed by a fourth card dealt face up (fourth street), a betting round followed by a fifth round dealt face up(fifth street), a betting round followed by a sixth card dealt face up(sixth street), abetting round followed by a seventh card dealt face down(seventh street). This is the final round of betting. When the betting is complete, all active players must show all their cards face up for the dealer to determine the best hand using any five cards in the hand.

Poker Talk

My name is Rick Chaurette I am the Director of Poker for Casino Del Sol. I am excited for the opportunity to share some of my knowledge and experiences with you.

I think the most common misconception about poker is that everyone playing in the room is an expert. I know that is what I thought in the mid 1970's standing outside the poker room at the Sahara Casino in Las Vegas. I was watching a seven-card stud game and was sure I was looking at real professionals in action. After about thirty minutes I gathered enough nerve to walk in the room knowing every eye was on me. I gave the person at the desk my name and my game request. A few minutes later I was in a real Casino poker game. Although my only previous experience was in the Navy and at my dad's poker parties I soon came to realize the vast majority of the people in the room were no more an expert than me. Within an hour I was very comfortable at the table and have been in love with the game of poker ever since.

More than any other form of gaming poker is a social game. Maybe that is part of the initial feeling of many new to casino poker that they are an outsider. It is true in most casinos many of the players know each other. This is part of the nature of the game. Players learn or try to learn the playing pattern of other players. This is a large part of the recent world wide poker explosion. Like any great game there are strategies, math, and intense competition and yet as we have seen in the major events recently it does not necessarily take a seasoned professional to win at poker. No matter the limit or the experience a player is consistently challenged. Personalities, patience, and intellect are all put to the test. Poker is the one casino game which with the exception of an ante or posting of a blind a player can evaluate their chances by looking what has been dealt to them before placing a wager. Think about that. I may be biased but do not know of any game that can be played by almost everyone that offers more.

Heartland Poker Tour at Casino Del Sol
The poker room recently concluded our first collaboration with a nation wide poker tour as the Heartland Poker Tour visited Tucson. The event was a hugely popular with those Arizona players who have been begging for a large tournament.

We enjoyed having the opportunity to provide our guests with a taste of big time tournament action as players from as far away as Florida invaded Casino del Sol. At $1,650 per player it was by far the largest event ever in Tucson as 141 players signed up for a chance at a prize pool of over $200,000 including several touring poker professionals. When the smoke cleared and the final 6 remained for the televised portion of the event which will be aired nationally in March, only Arizona players remained.

Chuck Weaver finished 6th and picked up $10,056, Seth Krasne came in 5th worth $12,067, Ray Yee was 4th with $14,078, Todd Lundwall 3rd netting $18,101, Don Siulstad was the runner up taking home $28,157, and our 1st place winner was Andreas Foulias walking out with $56, 313 for his day’s work. I am especially proud of Chuck Weaver who along with wife Jan are regular guests and considered part of our family. And of course poker dealer Ray Yee who is the only employee of the host casino to ever make the final table at a Heartland event. Congratulations to all.

The Poker Room
We have been very fortunate over the last several years in building a room of which we are very proud. We have a casino management team who understand the business and the added value of each department. I am very excited to announce the poker room will be moving into our new location in the near future. The move will allow us to expand as well as improve services to our guests. The room will be quiet and completely smoke free. We are planning several innovations all geared to increase the enjoyment of our poker players. It is because of the tremendous support of our loyal customer base that we are able to make this move. You tell us every day why you play here and we do listen.

We are looking forward to providing you with unmatched amenities and as always treat our players as we would expect to be treated.

Whatever happened to Seven-Card Stud?
Not to long ago when you played in any room there was a good chance you would be in a stud game. Good players would be diligent about tracking the exposed cards and the size of the pot to determine their odds. Stud is a game of patience and many would argue the true test of poker skill. But as with many things times change and today’s player wants fast action and immediate gratification.

I guess other than the obvious reality that very few people ask for the game the point was made crystal while conducting the dealing audition of a potential poker employee who had recently graduated from a dealing school. They dealt a couple of hands of hold’em with little problems and the same with Omaha. Then I asked for a couple of stud hands. They looked at me like I was from Mars. After witnessing their attempt to get through that game I was left wondering if I had become a dinosaur. Oh well time marches on.
