Wildcat Country: Sewailo Golf Club at Casino Del Sol Resort and the University of Arizona Extend Partnership through 2020
Aug. 31, 2015 - Sewailo Golf Club at Casino Del Sol Resort will remain “Home of the Arizona Wildcats” for the next five years. After a successful trial period which began in 2013, Sewailo and the University of Arizona (UA) have decided to extend their agreement through the 2020 season, making Sewailo the official home course of the UA women’s and men’s golf teams.
“These elite athletes deserve a championship-style golf course to practice, train, and compete on, and we are excited that Sewailo can be utilized to take the Wildcat golf program to the next level,” said Kimberly Van Amburg, CEO of Casino Del Sol Resort.
This partnership gives the UA golf teams exclusive access to Sewailo’s 18 hole championship golf course. The teams also have access to a separate practice facility that boasts a driving range with chipping and putting areas specifically for UA golfers.
“We’re extremely pleased to be continuing our relationship with Sewailo Golf Club to serve as the Home of the Wildcats for another five years,” said Arizona Director of Athletics Greg Byrne. “We’ve been really happy with our arrangement at Sewailo and we believe our golf programs have benefitted from the top-notch amenities the course and its training facilities have provided.”
“The Wildcats enjoy practicing and playing at Sewailo. Having the opportunity to practice at the first-class facility has helped our women’s team improve in all aspects of their game. We have seen a huge improvement in our short game stats since the partnership began,” said Laura Ianello, head women’s golf coach at UA.
Beyond practice, Sewailo Golf Club will also be utilized for collegiate play at no cost to the teams, including the men’s Arizona Intercollegiate in January 2016, and the women’s Wildcats Invitational in March 2016. Both events will host 15 of the nation’s top college programs for 54 holes of intense competition at Sewailo.
“We’ve been extremely pleased with the continued commitment the Pascua Yaqui Tribe, Casino Del Sol Resort, and Sewailo Golf Club have shown Arizona,” said Head Men’s Golf Coach at UA, Jim Anderson. “Sewailo Golf Club is a place all Wildcats are very proud to call home and we’re happy to be extending this partnership.”
Co-designed by Notah Begay III, a standout player on the PGA tour and commentator on the Golf Channel, and Ty Butler, a renowned golf course architect, Sewailo is a challenging, first-rate golf course that measures 7,400 from the championship tees, with picturesque views of the surrounding landscape.
